Ricardo Melendez

Ricardo is the Artistic Director of Virginia Ballet Theater, and Associate Artistic Director of Todd Rosenlieb Dance in Norfolk, Virginia. He is as well, the Former Artistic Director for Ballets De San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mr. Melendez is a former principal dancer with Dance Kaleidoscope, Indianapolis, where he later served as Assistant Artistic Director. He has performed with The Alvin Ailey Dance Ensemble, Ballet Hispanico of New York, Ballets de San Juan and others. Mr. Melendez is as well an international choreographer. His works has been seen across the USA as well as Italy, UK and the Caribbean. Former faculty for Virginia School of the Arts, Mr. Melendez currently teaches at the Governor School for the Arts both in the Theater and Dance Departments as well as at the Tidewater Community College, Norfolk Campus and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Melendez also serves as Founding Producing Director for Workshop Theatre Group, a regional theater troupe based in Virginia. As an actor, Ricardo recently was awarded the ‘Best Male Actor” at the Dublin Theater Festival for his interpretation of Nijinsky in Workshop Theatre Group production of Nijinsky’s Last Dance, previously performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, in Spain and many regional theaters across America.

Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mr. Melendez holds a BA degree in Dance Pedagogy from Butler University and a MFA degree in Theater from Brooklyn College, New York.
