Wheeling Intelligencer
Prof. J. M'H. Jones
Appointed to the Principalship of the State Colored Institute.
September 16, 1898
A special dispatch to the Intelligencer states that the board of regents of the West Virginia State Colored Institute, at Fern, has elected Prof. J. McHenry Jones, of Wheeling, to the principalship. Until recently J. H. Hill was principal, but he accepted a first lieutenancy in the Eighth United States infantry (immunes).
Prof. Jones has been principal of the Lincoln colored school in this city for eighteen years, and is known throughout the country as an educator as second in ability to none of his race. He could not be seen last night, and it is not known whether or not he will accept. Wheeling people will feel inclined to the hope that he will remain here.
