A column of eight thousand (8000) is now in the valley - Floyd is advancing by way of Wyoming intending to cut us off at coals mouth - I have been fighting them two days commencing at Fayette - my whole force is at this point which I will be compelled to evacuate tonight or have my retreat intercepted - I shall make a stand below Charleston. I have orders from Gen Halleck to fall back to Point Pleasant if the forces should be too strong for me. Our loss supposed to be near two hundred (200) not positively known.

I am here with my command. Was compelled to fall back from Fayette but not until after a days hard fighting with skirmish all the way to Charleston, where I made a stand but was compelled by superior force to fall back from there, which I did in good order, bring my transportation, but losing my stores. I find Pt Pleasant untenable without some work which I shall proceed to do as safely as I can. My report will be forwarded by mail.

Cranor has the whole of the Sandy valley on both sides put under his charge & can only send forward to coal mouth small expeditions at present. These will not amount to more than scouting parties but will disquiet the enemy on that side if you will inform me where the cavalry on 18 mile is supposed to be I will try to look after it with some of the force going up the valley.
