WEEK MINI-GRANTS

The sympathy and concern of the Archives and History staff are with all who have suffered as a result of the terrible events of September 11, 2001. Many of our staff members have family and friends in the areas most directly affected, but all are safe. Visitors to the Cultural Center may want to pay their respects to the Firefighters and Police Officers Memorials located on the north side of the plaza, both dedicated to those who have fallen in the line of duty. We have noticed more visitors than usual to these two statues in the past week. As a result of heightened security, visitors to Archives and History will see an increased Capitol Security and West Virginia State Police presence at the Capitol Complex. Please be patient and cooperative with their requests. They are here for the safety of all. We also encourage avoidance of stereotyping and intolerance of any particular person or group. As West Virginians we should know all too well how easy it is for the majority to be misunderstood and condemned for the ways of a few. West Virginia is a state made strong by the blending of many ethnic backgrounds and diverse cultures. We should celebrate our history and honor our past by setting an example of acceptance for the rest of America to follow.

MINI-GRANT APPLICATIONS
NOW AVAILABLE
The West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) has announced a mini-grants program to provide funding to assist with Preservation Week historic walking tour activities. No matching funds are required for the grants of no more than $2,000.00 each provided through the Historic Preservation Fund of the National Park Service. The grants are intended for the production of publications to inform and to educate the public about specific historic resources, such as brochures for walking or driving tours and/or individual sites. Funding applies to design, research and/or printing of materials.
According to the program description available through the West Virginia SHPO office, the primary purpose of the project is to provide information on existing historic and prehistoric sites. A cultural resource survey must have been completed in that area, and subjects of brochures must be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There also must be a commitment that the materials will be used and/or distributed, with a plan prepared for doing so.
SHPO staff will review applications received by the December 15, 2001, deadline for completeness and eligibility and will compile a list of projects according to the priorities and selection criteria outlined in the program description. Some projects may receive partial funding. The Archives and History Commission will review the applications and select the projects to be awarded the mini- grants.

MEET OUR STAFF
TERRY LOWRY
Archives and History welcomes our newest staff member, Terry Lowry. Terry joined us this month as a Cultural Program Associate. He will be assisting patrons of the Archives and History Library, as well as answering research letters. Terry is known to most West Virginia historians as the author of six books about the Civil War in West Virginia, particularly Last Sleep: Battle of Droop Mountain. His most recent work is Images of the Civil War in West Virginia, co-authored with Stan Cohen. Terry came to Archives and History from a position as docent and curator of Craik- Patton House. He has participated in Civil War re- enactments and has had three Civil War movie roles as a costumed extra. He appears on screen in Glory and in Gettysburg. We are especially glad to have Terry on staff, not only for his knowledge of Civil War history, but for his acquaintance with the Archives and History collection, and for his twenty years of experience researching genealogy.
DONATIONS
Almost all of the items on the August New Title List were donated by the authors or the historical/genealogical society that sells the publication. On behalf of the current citizens of West Virginia and the descendants of West Virginians who return to use the Archives and History Library, we thank you. We appreciate the organizations that have responded to our request for donations of items published by them that are not in the West Virginia Archives and History Library collection. We know the societies are always struggling for funds to stay afloat, and we recognize the sacrifice they make in donating copies.
We also are grateful to Kenneth Fischer Craft, Jr., who continues to donate copies of his series, Ohio County (WV) Index, to the Archives and History Library as he completes each volume. His most recent gift, Volume 7, continues his index to Ohio County court order books, and includes as well several maps of the area showing property owners for which the author has compiled name indexes. The next book will be Volume 7A, a cumulative "Personal Time Line" index to Volumes 1 through 7, with 110,000 entries. Volume 8 will start a new series of records, the "index card files" to court case files and loose papers in the West Virginia and Regional History Collection of West Virginia University. Mr. Craft's work is published by Heritage Books, Inc.
