Howard Sutherland, a native of Missouri, moved to Elkins, West Virginia in 1893 and was a prominent leader in the coal, railroad, and timber businesses. He served as a Republican in the state senate from 1908 to 1912, congressman from 1913 to 1917 and was elected to the United States Senate in 1917. After failing in a 1922 reelection bid, Sutherland resumed his business activities, served on numerous boards, was appointed Alien Property Custodian by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925. He retired in 1925, and was a resident of Washington until his death on March 12, 1950. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Elkins.
The Sutherland Collection consists of hundreds of letters written by and to Sutherland, concerning business and political affairs.
