Dr. Joseph Ray, a native of Western Virginia, and one of the Professors in the Woodward High School of Cincinnati, died in that city on Tuesday last.
Dr. Ray was widely known as the author of a series of Arithmetics, and of a series of works on Algebra, which have been very popular throughout the West.
The cause of education in the West has sustained a great loss in the death of Dr. Ray. A man of learning and fine natural abilities, he would would [sic] have done honor to the medical profession, but after graduating with honors at the Ohio Medical College, he devoted his scholarship and his talents for more than twenty years, to the elevation of the standard of education in the great West, and especially in the State of Ohio. He has long been a member of the Board of Examiners, and at the time of his death, in addition to his duties as President of the Woodward High School, he acted as one of the editors of the "Ohio Journal of Education."
