The Glorious Victory Yesterday.
February 6, 1863
What shall we say of the glorious victory of the new State men in this city and county yesterday?
No ordinary language is sufficient to do it justice.
We do not hesitate to pronounce it the most signal and glorious victory over achieved in our midst.
The enemy were routed horse, foot and dragoons. Utterly overthrown and demoralized.
Ohio county and the city of Wheeling send their joyous greetings to the glorious sisterhood of counties throughout West Virginia, and announce to them that come weal or come woe their destiny is forever one and inseperable with them.
The victory for the new State is complete. Henceforward, from this to the day of the vote on the ratification, the verdict of yesterday will swell into overwhelming proportions.
Let the new State men of the mountains take up the glorious tidings, and echo and re-echo it through the valleys and among the hill-tops, and make all West Virginia one wild welkin of enthusiasm for the Union and the new State.
Glorious - ever glorious is our great victory. It will stand through all time to come as the beginning of the end of the great contest for the admission of glorious, free West Virginia as a State into the Union.
