March 2, 1863
Washington Vennom, a deserter from the 34th Ohio Infantry was sent in handcuffs to his regiment on Saturday on board the steamer Liberty. Shortly after the host left the city a military officer on board the boat took the responsibility of removing the handcuffs and Vennom made his escape at Benwood. Major Darr offers a reward a $10 and expenses for the apprehension of Vennom.
The officer who removed the handcuffs is supposed to be under arrest at Parkersburg.
