Secretary Stanton. - The Secretary of War came down from Steubenville on Saturday and crossed at Benwood on his way to Washington City. He came out to enjoy a thanksgiving dinner at his old home in Steubenville with his mother. He was serenaded on Friday evening previous and made a brief speech, thanking the citizens for the honor done him and expressing his kind regards for the people of his native place.
During the last campaign a man b the name of Cable, a prominent Copperhead politician, who resides in Steubenville, made speeches throughout the State in which he abused the Secretary and traduced the Government. Not long ago he got on a spree and enlisted as a private in the army, and his friends have applied to have him promoted or released. The Secretary of War is said to have alluded to the case of Cable in his speech of Friday evening and took occasion to state that Cable should serve out his time and that he would be closely watched.
