Timeline of West Virginia: Civil War and Statehood
January 3, 1864

At a meeting of the Surgeons of the 2nd Division of West Virginia, held at this place, January 3, 1864, Surgeon P. Gregg, 23nd Illinois volunteers was called to the Chair, and Assistant Surgeon J. S. Taylor of same regiment was appointed Secretary. The following resolutions were drafted and submitted by a committee composed of Assistant Surgeons Gillespie, English and Crane, and adopted by the meeting.

WHEREAS, It hath pleased the Supreme Ruler of the Universe to remove by death, from our midst, our friend and brother Surgeon J. W. Moss, of the 14th Virginia Infantry, it is therefore

Resolved, That while we bow with submission to the stern decree, yet we cannot but deplore his loss, cut off as he has been, in the prime of life and in the midst of his usefulness.

Resolved, That by his death we have lost a value friend, society a useful Member, and the Army an efficient and skillful Surgeon.

Resolved, That our earnest sympathy be extended to the bereaved family circle in this their hour of trial.

Resolved, That copies of the above resolutions be signed by the Chairman and secretary, and forwarded severally to the family of the deceased, the Wheeling Intelligencer and the Parkersburg Gazette.
