Abstract from Record of Events on return of Third Brigade, Third Cavalry Division, Department of West Virginia, for February, 1864.

A scouting party of 20 men of the Third West Virginia Cavalry, under Lieut. Henry A. Wolf, Company K, sent out from Hurricane Bridge, W. Va., had a skirmish with the enemy [February 20], in which Lieutenant Wolf was killed.

Senator Copley yesterday received a letter from Hurricane bridge, Putnam county, stating that Capt. Wicher, commanding a small force at that point, sent out a scouting party, on the 21st of February, under command of Lt. Wolf. About twelve miles from Hurricane bridge, the party came upon a gang of rebels in ambush, and Lt. Wolf and seven horses were killed at the field. The rebels were charged upon several times, and each time the small scouting party was repulsed. The letter states that the counties of Cabell and Wayne are swarming with rebels, and that it will be impossible to dislodge them without a much larger force.
