June 8, 1864
At a memorial meeting of the 4th Street M. E. Sunday School, held on Sunday, the 5th inst., to commemorate the death of several of its members killed in the recent fights in the Valley of Virginia, the following resolutions of respect were passed:
WHEREAS, In the dispensations of an all-wise Providence, we are called upon to mourn the death of our late associates and friends, George L. Conley and Alex. H. Jefferson, who were killed in the service of their country, at the recent action of New Market, Va., and of John Moore, who recently died from disease contracted in the military service of the country - all of whom were endeared to us by long and familiar acquaintance, and by their many excellent qualities, therefore,
Resolved, That we have learned with sincere and profound regret, the death of these our late associates, whose correct deportment, earnest and devoted attention to all their duties as scholars, and whose patriotic impulses, which led them to offer their lives a sacrifice on the alter of their country, have won for them an ever-during rememberance.
Resolved, That we shall ever cherish their memories, emulate their virtues, and strive to meet them in that better land, where sorrow never comes.
Resolved, That we tender our sincere sympathy to the relatives and friends of the deceased, commending them to the kind care of our Heavenly Father, without whose notice not even a sparrow falls.
Resolved, That these resolutions be entered on the minutes of the school, and copies furnished the families of deceased.
