By Special Order No. 234, dated at the Adjutant General's Office, War Department, July 14th, 1864, we notice that Col. John Ely, Veteran Reserve Corps, is directed to relieve Lt. Col. Darr, Jr., 1st Va. Cavalry, in his duties as Assistant to the Provost Marshal General, and as Superintendent of the Volunteer Recruiting Service, and as Chief Mustering and Disbursing office in the State of West Va.
Provost Marshal General Fry, in parting with Col. Darr, says: "I much regret to lose your services in West Virginia, and I offer you my thanks for the zealous and efficient manner in which you have performed the difficult duties devolving upon you while under this Bureau."
Gen. Fry speaks highly of Col. Darr's successor, and says he is sure the appointment will prove satisfactory to the Governor and to the people of West Virginia.
Col. Darr leaves Wheeling, we understand, for his new field of labor in another department, about the first of August. We are sure that the good will of all our Union people in this city who know him will follow him. In the discharge of his duties here in the various military positions filled by him, he had proved himself a man of enviable business capacity. He has been a faithful servant of the government, and those who know him best appreciate him most. We very much regret his departure.
