The Attack on Winfield.

Capt. Reynolds and his men deserve great credit for the determined bravery with which they defended the post of Winfield, last Wednesday morning.
Eighty men fought for one hour, and kept at a respectful distance, four hundred and twenty-five of the Virginia "chivalry!" Will Col. Witcher go back this time and boast of his victories?
But we must not forget, in our exultation over the heroic valor of our own men, as compared with the miserable cowardice of Witcher's land pirates, of how much and importance the defeat of the guerillas was to us, and to give due credit to the gallant band who saved our communication below from being cut off and possibly one or more of our boats from being captured and burnt.
We gave the principal facts last week. Our men took five prisoners, among them Ed. Thurman, who is here in the guard-house, and wounded seven of the rebels, besides killing Phil. Thurman. Our loss was two, slightly wounded.
