At a meeting held by the citizens of Simpson township in Bridgeport, W. Va., on Saturday March 4th, 1865, on motion, Mr. F. D. Kemble was called to Chair, and Col. F. J. Harmison appointed Secretary.
On motion, Mr. Wilkinson was called upon to explain the object of the meeting, which he did in an eloquent manner.
On motion it was moved that a committee of five be appointed to draft resolutions for this meeting. The president appointed the following gentlemen: Geo. Higginbotham, Andrew S. Moore, Frank J. Harmison, John Davisson and D. D. Wilkinson. The committee after retiring a few moments reported the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted:
Whereas, The Board of Supervisors for Harrison county having refused to levy a bounty to raise volunteers to fill the quota of this county under the late call for troops, therefore,
Resolved, That we, the people of Simpson township feel it our duty to make an effort to raise by voluntary subscription an amount sufficient to relieve our said township or sub-district from the coming draft.
Resolved, That we obtain an amount sufficient to pay to each recruit the sum of four hundred and twenty-five dollars.
Resolved, That this meeting cordially endorse the course of our Supervisor, G. W. Sandusky, in voting for a county bounty to volunteers.
On motion it was moved that this meeting adjourn until Saturday, March 11, at 2 o'clock P. M.
