Holt Pays Tribute To Late Historian

Mrs. Poffenbarger's Efforts In Behalf of Pt. Pleasant Monument Lauded

Gov. Holt paid tribute yesterday to the late Mrs. Livia Simpson Poffenbarger, stating that "perhaps no person contributed more to the appreciation of West Virginia history."

He also mentioned Mrs. Poffenbarger as a leader and spoke of her untiring efforts toward the completion of a suitable monument at Point Pleasant, scene of the first battle of the American Revolution.

The governor's statement follows:

"Perhaps no person has contributed more to the appreciation of West Virginia history than Mrs. Livia Simpson Poffenbarger. As a resident of Mason county in her early life, the battle of Point Pleasant attracted her interest and practically single handed, she accumulated and presented the facts which established the real significance of that battle in the American revolution.

"Mrs. Poffenbarger had a dynamic personality and her presentation of the causes which received her interest were as effective and convincing as any that I have ever heard.

"She was indeed a leader and it is hoped that the work in which she was so deeply interested, proper recognition of the significance of early West Virginia history and the completion of a suitable monument to the first battle of the American Revolution, may not fail because of the loss of her very effective leadership but may have th full fruition which her continued leadership would undoubtedly have attained."
