James Howard Galloway was born August 21, 1910, in Pisgah, West Virginia, the fourth child of Thomas Ira and Mamie Belle King. He attended elementary school at Greenville, located near his home, and was a graduate of Bruceton High School. On March 19, 1938, of that year, he married Kathleen Eleanor Bryte in a ceremony at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Kingwood. James went to work for Monongahela Power Company as a temporary truck driver in June 1938 and later became a permanent truck driver for the Morgantown division, working in the Kingwood district. He continued in this position until October 16, 1941, when he classified as an apprentice lineman.
He entered the Army on September 24, 1943, and received training at Camp Blanding, Florida, in October. In early June 1944, Galloway, a member of Company I, 134th Infantry, 35th Division, went overseas where he soon went into combat in France and took part in the mission which broke the German hold around the area of St. Lo. In August 1944, Private Galloway was part of a motorized troop whose mission was to prevent German forces from isolating the Third Army by cutting of the narrow corridor of Avranges, thus blocking the source of the Third Army's vital supplies. On August 9, Private Galloway was killed in Normandy, in the area of Mortain referred to as "the Hedgerows." He was buried in the Brittany American Cemetery in St. James, France.
