Glenn W. Moyers was born in 1914 to Pearl Alice Moyers. He lived in Morgan County, West Virginia prior to his enlistment. He enlisted as a private in the United States Army on February 22, 1941 at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California, and his enlistment was for the Philippine Department. Glenn was sent to the Philippines to serve as a private first class with the 31st Infantry Regiment.
Glenn served with great courage during the battle in the Philippines in 1941, but he was captured as a prisoner of war when the brave American and Filipino forces could no longer fight off the invading Japanese army and were forced to surrender in 1942. Glenn was held as a prisoner of war in the Philippines for two years. While being transported to Japan on the Arisan Maru, Glenn lost his life on October 24, 1944 when the unmarked ship was torpedoed by an Allied submarine in the South China Sea. His death was received by the War Department on June 16, 1945.
Glenn was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters and his body was buried at sea. In recognition of his honorable service in World War II, and for his ultimate sacrifice, Glenn W. Moyers's name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in Manila, Philippines, and Glenn's was one of the original names inscribed on the West Virginia Veterans Memorial.
