Albert Schattel was born and resided in the State of Texas. He was passing through West Virginia for a very short time prior to World War II, and is therefore included in some lists of West Virginia veterans. He enlisted in the United States Army in California, and it appears that Texas always remained his permanent residence.
Albert served in the Philippines as a Staff Sergeant with the 34th Pursuit Squadron of the 24th Pursuit Group of the United States Army Air Forces in the Philippines. He was taken prisoner following the fall of the Philippines in 1942. He was a Japanese prisoner of war at POW Camp #2- Davao Mindanao Philippines, and he lost his life during the sinking of the Arisan Maru on October 24, 1944. For his service, the United States awarded Albert Schattel the Purple Heart.
