Jack attended Frenchton and Macedonia Grade schools and Buckhannon-Upshur High School, then located where the Academy Intermediate School now stands. According to his sister, Ethel, he made really good grades but never had to study. Jack loved baseball and played on a community team at Frenchton. He also worked on nearby farms, using a tractor to plow gardens.

He enlisted in the army on February 3, 1947, and attended Officers Candidate School, where he was commissioned a lieutenant on December 19. In 1948, Jack was sent to Korea, where he served an eleven-month tour of duty. He was a member of 555th Field Artillery Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team, referred to as the triple nickel. Purple Heart certificate
