Harry A. Layfield was born April 15, 1890, at Harrisville in Ritchie County, West Virginia. He was the second of five children born to William and Katherine Hall Layfield.

He attended schools at Hartley and Oil Ridge until the age of 17 and received his common school diploma in 1908. Harry then taught a term of school in Mingo County. In 1914 and 1915, he attended Cairo High School, graduating in the latter year. He taught one term at Mt. Zion and Elm Run, while each year attending the spring term at Marshall College (University) from which he graduated in 1916. In the fall of that year, he became the principal of Dellslow Grade School in Monongalia County where he was teaching when war was declared.

Upon enlistment in the Army, he was sent to Camp Greene in North Carolina after which he went to Camp Hill, Long Island. He sailed for France in May 1918. A private in Company F, 47th Infantry, 4th Division of the American Expeditionary Force, Harry Layfield was killed in action on September 27 in Bois-de-Septsarges, France, during the Argonne Offensive. His body was returned to the United States and was interred in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in his native Ritchie County.
