Charles Willard Miller Jr.
1949 -1969

Charles Willard Miller Jr. was born March 19, 1949, at Parkersburg, West Virginia, to Charles and Cora Tice Miller. He had a sister and two brothers.

Charles, called "Chuckie," attended St. Marys High School, graduating with the class of 1967. While a student at the Pleasants County school, he was active in sports and student activities. During his senior year, Chuckie was one of four captains of the football team and a member of the student council, track team, and Varsity "S" Club. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church.

Charles entered the military and began his tour of duty in Vietnam on August 12, 1968. He was a member of the medical evacuation unit, known as the "Purple Foxes," of the First Marine Airwing. On February 7, 1969, Charles, then a corporal, was crew chief aboard a CH-46D Sea Knight helicopter which was taking part in medevac mission in the South Vietnamese province of Guang Nam in an area dubbed "Arizona Territory." While starting to descend the copter was hit by enemy automatic weapons fire and crashed in a rice paddy. Six of the men aboard were killed, including Corporal Charles Willard Miller Jr.
