Remember...Francis Junior Nuce

Francis Junior Nuce was born September 7, 1931, in Preston County, West Virginia, the only son of six children born to Ola and Osa Nuce. He grew up in Masontown where Ola Nuce was a farmer. Francis graduated from Masontown High School after which he went to work at Sterling Faucet Company until he enlisted in the Army on May 13, 1952.
The Army sent Francis to basic training at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, and then he took a brief furlough, during which he visited his family. Upon his return, the military ordered him to Japan, where he spent a month in engineer training. Francis then was sent to Korea, a member of Company A, 13th Engineer Combat Battalion.
Francis' time in Korea went smoothly until May 27, 1953. While constructing infantry bunkers for troops defending "Pork Chop Hill" near Sakogae, North Korea, he was struck by enemy mortar fire and killed. In August 1953, the body of Pvt. Francis J. Nuce was returned home to Masontown and was interred in Herring Cemetery.
