Remember...Wayne Sellards

Wayne Sellards was born June 25, 1893, in East Lynn, West Virginia, the eldest and only son of six children born to Attison and Mary Hutchinson Sellards. Wayne attended East Lynn School and played baseball with the local league.

Wayne enlisted in West Virginia National Guard on June 19, 1916. In October he was deployed to Texas as a member of the West Virginia 2nd Infantry Regiment and took part in the "punitive expedition" into Mexico. He returned to West Virginia and was mustered out of the service in Huntington on March 24, 1917. He was called back into service on April 2 as the United States entered World War I.
After several months of performing Internal Security Duty he was sent to Camp Shelby, Mississippi, where he received training as a combat engineer. Upon arrival in France in June of 1918 he was assigned to Company F, 314th Engineers, 89th Division, U.S. First Army AEF. Private Wayne Sellards participated in the St. Mihiel Offensive which took place September 12-16, 1918. He died September 26, 1918, of wounds received in battle. His body was temporarily interred in France then returned to the United States in August of 1922 and reburied in the Sellards Family Cemetery in East Lynn. |
