  • This information is presented as it appears on the West Virginia State Archives Microfilm.
  • Very little is known about these units. They were usually assigned to guard railroads and towns, scout for the regulars, or chase the Confederate partisans who were constantly attacking the Northern counties in small bands. Much acrimony and internicine warfare resulted from the bitter confrontations between locals supporting one side or another. Many civilians were arrested by both sides under questionable authority.
  • Those who served in Militia (Home Guard) units were not entitled to Federal Pensions, nor were they awarded the West Virginia Civil War medals. However, many were killed, wounded & prisoners of war.
  • The West Virginia Archives & History has a searchable database of the soldiers in the state militias - West Virginia Union Militia.
