From the Editor:
We are experiencing our usual influx of summer visitors in the Archives and History Library. We enjoy working with transplanted West Virginians and their descendants, many of whom come to us from California, Texas and Florida, as well as from Ohio and other places closer to home. We have especially enjoyed the opportunity to meet some of the researchers who normally work with us by mail most of the year, but who have been able to visit the Library in person during the summer months. Both new and repeat patrons have found the recently extended library hours convenient. As soon as additional staff are added to help us handle those new hours, we will introduce them to you through the Archives and History News.
ARCHIVES AND HISTORY LIBRARY
CD-ROM COLLECTION
The Archives and History Library now has a collection of indexes and original material available in CD-ROM format. The operating programs required to use the CD-ROM information have been installed on a computer in the Library for use by the public. Some of the titles offer new information for the Library collection, while others provide information in existence elsewhere in the collection, but now available in a searchable format. We think the census records indexes will be particularly useful in this regard. Those of you who are unable to visit the Archives and History Library, but who work with us through research letters, may request information from a CD-ROM title using the standard research request guidelines of up to two specific requests per letter. (The $10.00 out-of-state research fee will apply.)

ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO THE
COUNTY RECORDS AS LISTED IN
Archives and History News,
Volume I, No. 12, February 2001
Braxton: Courthouse fire in 1861, but many records still exist from 1836 on.
Jefferson: Fire in 1803, but records still exit from 1801 on.
Kanawha: Marriages for 1844-49 are not missing. The ledger is mislabeled. These years are recorded in correct chronological sequence in the ledger.
Lewis: Fire in 1886 destroyed courthouse, but records were saved.
Logan: Fire sometime during Civil War. Not all records lost.
Mingo: No fire, but flooded in 1977, heavily damaging records. Mingo was not created until 1895, so Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) was not interested in filming Mingo's records during the 1960's-70's when they filmed other counties because LDS was concentrating on pre-1900 records at the time. By the time Mingo records were scheduled for filming, privacy laws had been enacted which prevented copying many records. Births for 1900-24, Deaths for 1894-1925, Marriages for 1895-1926 and Wills for 1895-1926 were filmed. Pendleton: Fire in 1924, but no records lost. Roane: Both the courthouse built in 1856 and its replacement built in 1887 burned. Could not determine dates of fires. Not all records were destroyed. Many survived.
Wayne: Fire in 1921, but no records lost.
Wirt: Fire in 1910, but apparently not all records lost, as many records prior to 1910 still exist.

Several times this spring and summer the staff of Archives and History needed volunteer assistance to complete projects. As all good West Virginians do, we called upon our own family to help us out. We appreciate the efforts of Mrs. Mary Alice Johnson (mother of Mary Johnson), Ted Scouras (son of Susan Scouras), Andrew Neff (son of Fred Armstrong), Matthew Geiger (son of Joe Geiger) and Brandon Newhouse (son of Sharon Newhouse). We used Ted's muscles to move books and install shelving, while everyone else worked hard to get several massive mailings out on time. Thank you!
