Biographical Note:

Born in Huntington, West Virginia to William G. and Nintha Barnes Johnson on May 3, 1906, Tanner J. Livisay grew to serve the state of West Virginia as both a Home Demonstration Agent and an Extension Service Agent. Her work in these areas led her to be inducted into the West Virginia Agricultural Hall of Fame in April 1976, where she was noted to be "probably the most influential black woman in West Virginia."

Livisay graduated from Douglass High School in 1923 and obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from West Virginia State College in 1927. She taught school in Jefferson and Wyoming counties for fourteen years, and obtained her Master's Degree from West Virginia University. She furthered her studies at the Merrill Palmer Institute in Detroit, the University of Michigan, the University of Cincinnati, Cornell University, and Colorado State University.

Tanner J. Livisay began her work as a Home Demonstration Agent in 1941, serving Mercer, McDowell, and Wyoming counties. She helped to organize several Home and Garden clubs, 4-H clubs, and worked to establish the West Virginia Farm and Homemakers Council, which was associated with West Virginia State College, West Virginia University, and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. From 1945 to 1962, she served as District Home Demonstration Agent, serving the entire state of West Virginia.

In 1962, Livisay became the State Extension Specialist in Child Development and Human Relations, as well as an assistant professor of home economics at West Virginia University. She would also become the first African American Family Life Specialist in the country. She worked in the Extension Service for a total of 27 years before retiring in 1968. In 1994, her book, Reaching Out with Heart and Hand - The Memories of an Extension Worker, was published, giving Livisay's personal account of the work of the West Virginia Extension Service for African Americans. Throughout her career, Livisay accomplished many things, such as the development of a five-year statewide health plan, the organization of a statewide beautification campaign, the organization of a scholarship campaign for two historically black colleges (West Virginia State College and Bluefield State College), the development of various youth programs and workshops, and the development of two package program teaching kits, entitled "Living Creatively Through the Middle Years," and "Men and Creative Family Living," both of which receiving praise nationally. Along with her work, Livisay often attended and presented at various conferences, including the National Conference on Aging and the White House Conference on Children and Youth. She also hosted a radio program in Princeton on WLOH and appeared in several television programs in West Virginia and surrounding states.

Tanner J. Livisay was an active church member. On Easter Sunday, 1919, she was baptized at the 16th Street Church in Huntington, West Virginia, of which her grandmother and father were founding members. Upon moving to Detroit in 1976, she joined St. Timothy United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women and Eunice Circle. Livisay was also an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority-Epsilon Delta Omega and Eta Iota Omega Chapters. Her activities led her to receive many citations, plaques, and honors. She was named "Great Lakes Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Woman of the Year" in 1965; and in 1985, Eta Omicron and Gamma Phi Omega Chapters honored her as "Outstanding West Virginia Woman" during Black History Month. Tanner J. Livisay lived in Princeton, West Virginia from 1928 through 1976. Her husband, Jackson P. Livisay, passed away in 1974, prompting Mrs. Livisay to move to Detroit, Michigan, where she would live until her death in 2004 at the age of 98. Mrs. Livisay had four children: Jackson P. Livisay, Jr., W. Osborne Livisay, Carolyn L. McGhee, and Marilyn L. Stewart. As noted by her grandson, Victor Livisay, "Tanner J. Livisay's achievements are magnified given the unique challenges of being an African-American female during a period of intense segregation and discrimination. Mrs. Livisay rose above these difficulties and was a true pioneer in the chronicles of American history."
