Okey DeRaimo's View of Coal Life and Operations

On May 30, 2018, West Virginia Archives and History added the Okey DeRaimo Collection, which consists of nearly 2,000 negatives, to its photographic holdings. Serving in World War II as a bombardier in the 401st Bomb Group, DeRaimo was a prisoner of war for 16 months in the South Compound of Stalag Luft I, 1943-1945. Upon his return to the United States, DeRaimo worked as a photographer for Armco Steel, documenting coal life and operations in West Virginia, particularly in Raleigh, Boone, and Kanawha counties. His photographs highlight how people lived in mining towns and the work of miners in the 1940s and 1950s.
