Chafin Lauded For Charities Known To Few

Don C. Chafin, 67, of the Guaranty Building penthouse, colorful former Logan County sheriff who died here Monday, was described yesterday by the Rev. A. J. Coffey of Logan's First Christian Church, as a philanthropist who gave unselfishly to many worthy causes without permitting publicity about his gifts.
Speaking to some 300 persons many of whom had traveled long distances to attend the last rites at the Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary for the man they had known as a business or political associate, as a friend and companion, Mr. Coffey said Mr. Chafin's charities and philanthropies were numerous and the general public had no understanding of their magnitude.
Mr. Chafin, believed to be one of Huntington's wealthiest men, had made his home here since 1936.
Burial took place in Woodmere Cemetery.
