COVER PHOTO: William N. Edgell, born in Wetzel County in 1846, got his parents' permission to join the U.S. army at 17. He was transferred to Co. H of the 1st WV Infantry in March 1864 and fought in the Shenandoah Valley campaign that summer. He was discharged in 1865 and later became a Methodist Episcopal deacon.
