Timeline of West Virginia: Civil War and Statehood
January 30, 1863

Point Pleasant Register

We learn by a private letter received from Winfield, that Benjamin P. Morris, Deputy Sheriff of Putnam county, Va., was captured by a party of rebels on the 30th ult. Mr. Morris was out at Hurricane Bridge at the time, attending a sale. Fortunately he had little money with him.

A.L. Curry, Esp., was pursued by the same party, but succeeded in making his escape. We understand that a number of prominent rebels have been arrested as hostages.

A little more wholesome hanging and a little less swearing, is the only thing that will put an end to these raids.:Whenever any of those rebel thieves, cutthroats or guerrillas, are caught they should be immediately shot.
