Meeting in Preston County.
October 16, 1863
Editors Intelligencer:
At a meeting held in Brandonville, Preston county, West Virginia, in pursuance of a preceding call this 10th day of October, 1863, for the purpose of nominating suitable men for Congress, and our State Legislature,
On motion of H. Hagans, Esq., Col. J. G. Crawford was appointed to the Chair, and S. Forquer appointed Secretary.
On motion of H. Hagans, a Committee of seven was agreed upon to prepare resolutions, when the following gentlemen were unanimously appointed: A.C. Leach, J. Hereder, J. Robinson, Wm. Cuppett, Wm. Glover, W. S. Lyons and Alpheus Wheeler. The committee after retiring a short time, reported the resolutions:
1st Resolved, That we will support none but unconditional Union men, for any office; either State, county or township. And that we abhor and deprecate all factions opposition to the General Government, as now administered.
2d. That we will support J. C. McGrew, one of our present delegates, and William F. King, for the next Legislature.
3d. That we will also support John J. Brown for State Senator.
4th. That we have the utmost confidence in the loyalty, ability and integrity of Hon. Wm. G. Brown, and that we fell sure our rights and interests will be represented by his re-elections to Congress. Therefore resolved that we will give him our cordial support.
5th. That we pledge ourselves to oppose by all lawful means, all men for any office who have heretofore, or may hereafter, oppose the new State of West Virginia, or the general government of the United States.
6th. That the proceedings of this meeting be forwarded to the Wheeling Intelligencer, with the request that they be published. James G. Crawford, Pres.
