December 4, 1863
At a meeting of the Union citizens of Morgan County, held at Zion Church on Tuesday, December 1, 1863,
On motion of Sheriff Allen, Dr. John F. Dill was called to the Chair, and Jacob C. Michael was appointed Secretary.
On motion of Lewis Allen, a committee was appointed to report suitable resolutions, expressive of the object and sense of the meeting. Whereupon the committee reported the following:
Whereas, for some time past the 20th Pennsylvania cavalry have been quartered in this county, and a portion of its officers have shown their proper appreciation of a people who have given over one half of their fighting population to the cause of the Union, and not over a dozen to that of the rebellion, whilst their superiors have nevertheless upheld the rebels in business denied to union men, therefore
Resolved, That in Major T. B. Thorp, and the officers and men of his Batallion, we recognize true soldiers, a love of country and justice, a just hatred of rebels and rebellion, and shall at all times hold Major Thorp and his command in grateful remembrance.
Resolved, That to Captains Baldwin, Hammell, and Singhiser, their officers and men, we tender similar acknowledgments.
Resolved, That our warm thanks are due Lieut. Montgomery, late of the regular army, and to Lieut. Detrick, for their efforts to obtain equal justice and the known rights of Union citizens, whilst discharging the duties of Provost Marshals.
Resolved, That whilst we know what it cost to be a Union man on the south side of the Potomac river, and whilst we are willing to make any sacrifice for our loved and now bleeding country, yet we hold, and ever claim the right to frown upon those who bow at the shrine of rebel men and women at the expense of their country, and to the open mortification of those who have sacrificed their all upon the altar of loyalty.
Resolved, That we hurl back with utter contempt the accusation that all persons south of the Potomac are disloyal.
Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to Maj. Thorp, and to the several officers included in them, and a copy be sent to the Wheeling Intelligencer for publication.
