To the Memory of Lieut. Col. Hall.
Headquarters 13th W.V. Inf.
Camp Cedar Creek, October 29, 1864.
At a meeting of the officers of the 13th W.V. Infantry, convened October 26th for the purpose of giving suitable expression commemorative of the death of the late Lieut. Col. Jas. R. Hall, of this regiment, who fell at the great battle at Cedar Creek, Oct. 19th, 1864, whilst gallantly fighting in defense of his country. Col. Wm. B. Brown was appointed President, Captain McCoun Vice President and Wm. W. Harper, Chaplain, appointed Secretary. The following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted, viz:
Whereas. It has pleased Almighty God, in His all-wise Providence, to permit the removal from our midst, by the hands of violence, our much lamented and highly esteemed companion and fellow soldier, the late Lieut. Col. Jas. R. Hall; and
Whereas. It is right and our paramount duty, as well as a privilege, to manifest our grief and regards for those who suffer with us in our country's tribulations;
Therefore,
1. Resolved, That in the death of Col. Hall, this regiment has lost a brave and highly esteemed officer, and the country a true and tried patriot.
2. Resolved, That whilst we deeply regret the loss we have sustained in the death of our brave companion in arms, we will nevertheless bow in humble submission beneath the chastening rod of our merciful Heavenly Father, whose ways are above our ways, and whose counsels are past finding out.
3. Resolved, That we, his more fortunate associates who still survive the wreck and rain of the battlefield, are as much as ever convinced of the importance and necessity of maintaining and defending the great cause for which he, in the youthful vigor of manhood, has sacrificed his life.
4. Resolved, That we hereby tender our sympathies in behalf of his deeply afflicted and sorrowing parents and friends and assure them that nothing in our power that would alleviate their griefs and heal up the wounds thereby inflicted shall be left undone.
5. Resolved, That a copy of this preamble and resolutions be forwarded to the parents of the deceased, and a copy to the Wheeling Intelligencer and Gallipolis Journal for publication.
