February 28, 1865

On Tuesday two or three soldiers entered the cigar shop of Mr. Acheson, on Main street, and one of them bought a dime's worth of cigars and offered in payment a greenback. The person in attendance gave the soldier ninety cents in change. The soldier insisted that he had given the cigar man a five dollar note and that he must have four dollars more. The cigar man looked in the drawer but could find nothing but a one dollar greenback, and knowing that he had received that and that only, refused to give any more change. The soldier went before Ald. Dulty and made oath that he had given the cigar man a five dollar note and the latter not being able to prove to the contrary, was compelled to fork over four dollars.
