Description:
View into tunnel during the hydroelectric power construction on the New River. View shows downstream end of completed invert section of tunnel lining at Station 160 + 55. Wooden plugs along edges of invert are to prevent dirt from falling into the nuts which are cast in the concrete. The overlapping portion of the steel formwork will be bolted to these nuts when the tunnel lining is being placed. No special form of artificial lighting was used in making this picture as there was sufficient daylight at the tunnel portal. Camera at Station 161 + 00 looking upstream. The end of the steel lining which connects to the penstock system will begin 15 feet downstream from the finished concrete inverts. New-Kanawha Power Company, Hawks Nest - Gauley Development No. 371.
