Description:  The Virginia General Assembly passed an act which incorporated the Morgantown and Independence Railroad Company to construct a railroad from the Pennsylvania state line at or near the mouth of Cheat River, to Morgantown, to intersect the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at or east of Independence in Preston County. Subscription books were opened under the direction of the following commissioners: in Morgantown, under John Hanaway, William Lazier, Nicholas Pickenpaugh, and James Evans; and in Kingwood, under William G. Brown, John P. Byrne, Elisha M. Hagan, and John A. Dilly.
