Description:  The Virginia General Assembly passed an act which incorporated the Virginia Coal and Iron Company by the following: John M. Pancake, Joseph C. Pancake, E. M. Armstrong, and William A. Vance. The company's purpose was to mine coal and manufacture and transport iron, coal, lumber, and other mineral and vegetable articles in Hampshire County, Hardy County, Tucker County, and Preston County.
