The Virginia General Assembly passed an act which incorporated the Old Dominion Mining and Manufacturing Company by George A. Hamill and Israel Robinson. The company's purpose was to mine coal and iron ore and manufacture iron, coal, oil, candles in Preston County. Subscription books were opened at an unidentified location under the direction of the following commissioners: George A. Hamill, Israel Robinson, Magnus T. Snodgrass, Francis H. Grupy, and William B.
