Notes: Air Medal and Purple Heart Employed by a steel co. in Pittsburg prior to enlistment. Carved twice as Wilbur Hall and Wilbur S. Hall Military record has him as a "member of the crew of a B-17 type aircraft which was reported missing in action over the North Sea 21 July 1944 on a mission to Werzburg, Germany. Shortly after crossing into Continental Europe, the plane was subjected to intense anti-aircraft fire, and was damaged and started to return to its base. While crossing the North Sea, the plane exploded in the air and crashed into the water. Rescue units succeeded in picking up only one survivor. It has been officially established from reports received in the War Department that your son was killed in action on 21 July 1944 when his plane crashed into the North Sea off Crferdness, England."
