Art and utility unite in the West Virginia Division of Culture and History’s annual exhibition, Quilts and Wall Hangings 2008, which is on display in the Great Hall and Art Gallery of the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The crowd-pleasing juried exhibition features 53 exquisite quilts and wall hangings representing the talents of West Virginia quilters. Quiltmaking is one of West Virginia’s oldest and most treasured art forms, and this annual display has become a tradition with visitors from all over the United States and abroad. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 1.
Prizes were awarded in four categories: pieced quilts, appliqued quilts, mixed/other quilts and wall hangings. First- ($500), second- ($400), and third-place ($300) awards were given at the Saturday evening concert of the Vandalia Gathering, May 24. The division also made two purchase awards, one quilt and one wall hanging, and the judge designated a Best of Show prize of $100. In addition, five non-monetary honorable mention distinctions and one judge’s choice award were made. A complete list of exhibitors and winners is attached.
Mary Zesiger of Mt. Gretna, Pa., served as judge for this year’s exhibition. Since 1988, she has taught hundreds of quilters at all skill levels, and was awarded her Teaching Certification credentials by the National Quilting Association (NQA) in 1991. She also is an NQA certified judge.
Zesiger is a member of the National Quilting Association, the American Quilter’s Society and the Applique Society. She has a vast portfolio of award-winning quilts and has successfully managed her own quilt and cross stitch business.
The Cultural Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. the Archives Library closes at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and is closed on Sunday.
