Historical Note: William "Bill" Kelley was born in 1935 in Charleston, West Virginia and passed in 2022. In 1954, he graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. He began his career in TV production and broadcasting in 1954 with WCHS-TV. In 1957, Kelley began working for WSAZ-TV as a news photographer. He was involved in putting WMUL-TV on air in 1969. It was the first public television station in the Charleston/Huntington area. For 42 years, he served as the Executive Producer of Public Television Legislative Coverage until he retired in 1996. After retiring, he volunteered for West Virginia State Archives audio/visual collection. West Virginia Broadcasting Hall of Fame inducted Kelley in 2006.
For 60 years, Bill was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He was part of the Trustee Board and produced a weekly radio broadcast of the Sunday services. He participated in local Soap Box Derby events beginning in the late 1940s. Kelley was one of the founders of the local derby track built in 1969 at Little Creek Park in South Charleston.
Scope and Content: The materials within this collection includes programs on local Soap Derby events, publications on West Virginia, and articles with photos shot by Kelley.
