Historical Note:
Robert Charles Sloan was born in Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia on December 1, 1903. Robert was a graduate of Fairmont State College. He attended George Peabody College of Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Marshall University. He was a teacher at Taylor County schools. On April 7, 1928, Robert married Alta R. Levy of Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born on September 20, 1904. Alta was the principal of schools in Marion and Mercer Counties.

In 1930, they had a daughter named Alta Lee Sloan, also known as Bobby Lee. She attended Grafton High School and received her degree from Fairmont College in 1948.

They moved to the Kanawha County area in 1948 when Robert Sloan took a position at Charleston High School. He took care of Laidley Field for nine years, and he was a member of Kanawha Lodge No. 20 AF&AM, Scottish Rites, Mason, and Beni Kedem Shrine Temple. Mrs. Sloan was the principal at Oakwood School in South Hills. She was also a member of Charleston Women's Club and Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary fraternity for women educators. Mr. and Mrs. Sloan retired in the late 1960s.

They became active members of the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees. They received an award from the organization in 1985. The West Virginia Silver-Haired Legislature elected Robert C. Sloan to be a member in 1981.

Alta Lee, their daughter, changed her name to Bobby Lee and later married B. Curtiss. They had a son, Charles Appleton Curtiss, in 1968. On May 22, 1976, Alta Lee (Bobby Lee) passed away in Columbus, Georgia. She lived there for 15 years and worked at the Martin Army Hospital in Fort Benning.

Mrs. Alta Sloan died in 1992. Mr. Robert C. Sloan died in 1995. They were buried in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, Kanawha County, West Virginia.
